ABSTRACT:
Hic sunt dracones is an immersive interactive installation in virtual reality. Hsd originates from an exploratory venture carried out by f' and his team: a sideways climb along the northern cliff of a Mediterranean island. The exploratory action has been mapped with the aid of advanced digital technologies. The enormity of the data collected during the expedition were used in the production phase, thanks to the production company Recipient.cc, to create a complex and hybrid over-stimulated VR environment characterized by a non-linear narrative composed of 22 scenes (rooms’),and whose sequentiality is determined by the interaction between the viewer (player) and the system. Hsd transits between the player’s complete liberty to enter and exit the individual rooms and a limitation of the playing area (10x10 mt),inscribed into the physical exposition space. Hsd expands beyond the exhibition space through its connection to the Internet through triggers and bots that come to life on the basis of the movements of the player. The system introduces data and experiential information that the human body generates into the telematic network. The player sees informations taken from the web. With its hyper-technological tension Hsd transforms itself into a space where urgent issues such as the spectacularisation of the concept of the frontier and the impact of the digital technologies underpinning big data on the biopolitical dimension of contemporary society can be researched. In Hsd technological illusion and realism coexist in a constant search for a different spectatorial link from the haptic to the immersive tending to an almost biological dimension. The player is able to “climb” onto a hybrid island, somewhere between the real and the virtual, to pass through museum rooms and corridors that are partly real and partly holographic building imageries of “sense” and experiencing the constant feeling of hanging in the balance. Project made possible by the support of the DGCC under the Italian Council program, 4 th Edition, 2018.
