DESCRIPTION: #REL1=OFF is an intermedial work created specifically for the Malta Biennale. The title refers to a deactivation code that prevents closure and opens up new pathways: #REL1=OFF begins in fact, with an exploration, a climbing action on a section of Maltese cliff, selected by f' in dialogue with Climbing MT (Malta). The intervention involves the setting of a new climbing route, a traverse on the northern Gozo cliffs.
The physical action, a #para-performance, is not conceived as a spectacular gesture, but as an act of crossing the landscape in which f' body becomes an instrument for measuring space. During the climb, f' leaves minimal and non-invasive marks on the rock, bronze casts of f' and f' climbing partner's teeth and a cast of a bay leaf, titled Psycopomps and the nymph, traces that evoke a temporary and fragile bodily presence.
The action is documented in its entirety by a drone, which follows the movement of the body from the outside, producing the basic visual material for the work. The footage, subsequently reworked, is conceived as a video installation, designed to generate a perceptually alienating experience in which the landscape appears simultaneously stable and in transformation. In #REL1=OFF, the border emerges as an unstable place of tension between body, technology and representation. An audio track, titled Paralipomena of a Leaf, is not embedded in the video but is played as stand alone piece in the same exhibition space. It is accessible to the public through a QR code and unfolds additional interpretive layers of the artwork, linking the climbing exploration to an underlying mythical narrative.
This work is dedicated to Daphne Caurana Galizia.
